Shanghai

It seems a long way to travel to use Nikon’s new compact system cameras, the Nikon 1 J1 and it’s higher specified V1 brother, but lucky me, here I am in rather rainy and humid Shanghai, China with Nikon on a visit here to celebrate the launch of the new cameras and pay a visit to the factory and get some serious shooting time with both of the cameras and their lenses.

In essence, the Nikon 1 series compact digital system cameras are designed for those wanting the performance of a larger Digital SLR system camera, but in a compact and lightweight form that’s as easy to use a more normal campact.

And both cameras are svelte indeed, they’re very nice to use and provide a host of great shooting options along with some very neat camera technology, technology that enables you to shoot slow motion video at either 400-fps or 1200-fps, Full HD video too and shot stunning 10-megapixel stills.

Manual controls are limited and stashed away in menus, which is slightly frustrating for those wanting to get at the manul control options such as shutter and aperture priority, but the ethos here is more point and shoot with automated snapping modes that assess what your shooting and pick the correct shooting mode for you. This “Smart” system works ennerringly well too. The picture quality is good (though the JPEG files seem a little soft to me) but I’m looking forward to getting the time to get to grips with the RAW files to see what extra can be teased out of them.

The visit to the Nikon Imaging (China) factory was fascinating and it  revealed that the camera are, to all intents and purposes, hand built from components manufactuered on site.

Almost 8,300 Nikon staff work in two shifts and build the new Nikon’s and other Coolpix compact models in the factory based about 2-hours drive outside Shanghai.

I have got to get out and take some more shots now, but watch this space for further updates but check back soon for more images and further updates.

That’s Doug Harman, your man in Shanghai signing off.
