A derelict boat Dungeness, Kent

The Romney Marsh in Kent combines some unique opportunities for photographers from beached, derelict fishing vessels, rare bird and wildlife habitats, an amazingly flat landscape, with so much sky it can take your breath away and the amazing light the same sky provides and that make it a veritable photographer’s paradise.

Add to the mix a nuclear power station at Dungeness, its tiny community of artists and fisher folk and two lighthouses that seems to cling to the shingle beaches that predominate and what more could you ask for from such a location?

Dungeness offers stunning still life subjects with skies to match.

As a local professional photographer, specialising in weddings, portraits and architectural work, I had always fancied wandering the marshes to photograph the few remaining ruins of Romney Marsh’s ancient churches; many now just grid references and bumps of grass protruding from the otherwise flat landscape, others such as the ruins of Midley and Hope All Saints churches shown here are simply stunning subjects.

Other photographer’s treats include things such as the UK’s smallest public railway, in the shape of the beautiful steam locos of The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway, (a trick is to shoot them to make them look full scale, always fun) and you have an array of wonderful subjects to shoot unmatched for land reclaimed-form-the-sea. These are some of the results of my efforts.

I hoped to capture them and a variety of other subjects including the derelict fishing boats, buildings such as architect Clough William Ellis’s beautiful, Romney Bay House and those wonderful skies they all sit beneath.

Midley Church ruin, Romney Marsh. Some ruins, such as Midley Church can only be reached by crossing fields, ditches and dykes. Any roads, like the villages associated with the churches, have long since vanished into the marsh
Midley Church from the East.
Clough William-Ellis, the creator of the famous Italianate Portmeirion village in North Wales, also designed Romney Bay House, which is perched on the coast at New Romney, on the Marsh. It was built in the late 1920′s for the American actress and journalist Hedda Hopper.
